VERO
Virtually Empowered, Real-World Ready
Vero uses advanced VR/AR technology to simulate challenging environments for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). By immersing users in realistic scenarios, Vero helps them manage phobias, navigate social situations, and build confidence for real-world experiences. This tool is designed to empower adolescents with ASD to achieve greater independence, preparing them for tasks like public speaking and interacting with crowds.
Empowering Adolescents with ASD through AR/VR

Project Overview
-
Vero simulates anxiety-inducing environments—such as public speaking or crowded spaces—enabling users to build confidence, manage phobias, and gain social and economic independence.
-
Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often face challenges with social interactions, public speaking, and navigating crowded environments. These difficulties can lead to anxiety and limit their independence. Existing methods to help them prepare for these situations are often ineffective, underscoring the need for a more immersive solution to build their confidence and skills.
-
As a UX/UI designer and researcher, I focused on creating an accessible and user-friendly experience tailored to the specific needs of this audience. My goal was to ensure that the design is intuitive and supportive, making it easier for users to engage and benefit from the solution.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the UK.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 57 individuals in the UK, with 1.5 million identified as having special educational needs. Current NHS services face challenges in accessibility, delays, and customisation.

What the NHS is missing.
-
According to the UK Governments NHS Long Term Plan Fund (2021), accessibility to cognitive therapy appointments is one of the issues yet to be resolved.
-
Delays with checkups that assess how an individual with Autism is progressing.
-
Trouble with making customised, personalised plans that work specifically for the individual.
Our solution: Vero
Vero utilises AR/VR technology to create simulated environments that help adolescents with ASD navigate challenging situations gradually. This approach aids in managing phobias and increasing comfort in everyday scenarios, preparing users for tasks like public speaking and confidently handling crowded environments.
Design Strategy
Our design strategy centered on creating an intuitive, accessible, and supportive VR experience tailored to adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We adhered to user-centered design principles, beginning with in-depth research to understand the specific challenges this audience faces.
To ensure accessibility, we reduced sensory overload by offering customisable settings for visual and auditory stimuli. The interface is simple and intuitive, with clear navigation and visual cues that guide users through scenarios without overwhelming them. Gradual exposure techniques were implemented, allowing users to face increasingly challenging situations at their own pace, building confidence over time.
Throughout the process, we conducted iterative testing with users, refining the design to ensure Vero not only meets functional needs but also empowers users to foster independence and confidence.
